Guatemalan rum Zacapa XO is launching on the Czech market with new packaging. Diageo has begun rolling out the redesign gradually in the travel retail sector, with the brand moving away from its previous black-and-gold visual style. The new packaging is intended to look more contemporary and striking while making a stronger reference to the rum’s Guatemalan origins. According to the manufacturer, the blend itself remains unchanged.

For many years, Zacapa’s presentation has been based on a classic concept of luxury – dark colours, gold details, and a sturdy gift box. The new design takes a different direction. According to Diageo, the visual identity features warmer shades, organic lines, a more pronounced texture, and a lighter interior, intended to evoke the amber colour of the rum itself. The inspiration came from the Guatemalan landscape and the surroundings of the so-called “House Above the Clouds”, where Zacapa matures at an altitude of approximately 2,300 metres above sea level.

Luxury no longer looks the same

The redesign also clearly illustrates a broader shift in the premium spirits segment. Brands in travel retail are increasingly moving away from the traditional “dark luxury” aesthetic and striving to appear more modern, authentic, and closely connected to their place of origin. In recent months, Diageo has repeatedly highlighted that the duty-free environment is evolving from a purely sales-oriented channel into a space for experiences, gifting, and storytelling.

Gifting, in particular, is crucial for Zacapa. Diageo describes Zacapa as the strongest super-premium rum in global travel retail, and the new look is intended to help the brand appeal to consumers seeking a distinctive gift and a premium product.

The rum remains the same

The brand also emphasises that the redesign concerns presentation only. Zacapa XO continues to be made from the first pressing of ‘virgin sugar cane honey’, is aged for at least ten years, and the final blend is matured in cognac casks.

The new packaging is appearing first in travel retail, with further redesigns across the Zacapa portfolio to follow.
