Major chains in neighbouring countries are expanding their ranges to include additional plant-based chicken alternatives. Starbucks in Germany now offers a focaccia with Planted Chick’n, while Burger King in Austria has launched its own Plant-based Crispy Chicken burger.
Plant-based chicken alternatives are continuing to move from specialist vegan establishments into mainstream fast food. Starbucks in Germany has added the Focaccia Chick’n Salsa, featuring plant-based chicken from Swiss company Planted. The focaccia combines the plant-based product with tomato salsa, grilled peppers and rocket, and the chain describes it as 100 per cent plant-based.
Burger King Austria is taking an even more decisive step towards classic fast food. From 1 September, it will offer Plant-based Crispy Chicken — a plant-based alternative to its chicken burger. The product, developed in collaboration with The Vegetarian Butcher, contains two crispy chicken patties, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. Burger King describes it as plant-based, rather than vegan.
Both new products are launching in Germany and Austria almost simultaneously, demonstrating that plant-based meat alternatives are increasingly appearing directly on the menus of major international chains. For the Czech market, this also sends an interesting signal from its immediate neighbours.
