Flor de Caña 35 Year Rum was created to mark the 135th anniversary of one of Central America’s oldest companies, and it is not merely the pinnacle of the brand’s portfolio – it is, above all, a testament to time, continuity, and the place from which it originates.
The story of this rum does not begin in the year of its release, but more than three decades earlier. Back then, the spirit was placed in American white oak casks to mature slowly in an environment that cannot be replicated. The Nicaraguan terroir, shaped by the proximity of the Pacific Ocean and the monumental silhouette of the San Cristóbal Volcano, creates conditions in which time does not accelerate, but layers. The heat, humidity, and volcanic soil gradually imprint themselves on the rum’s structure, which, after more than 35 years, offers a complex profile with notes of honey, old wood, and liquorice, culminating in an exceptionally smooth finish.
Crucially, this rum was not created as a product planned for an anniversary. It comes from a private family reserve that has been kept for generations without any ambition for immediate commercial use. The spirit began maturing under the third generation of the family and is being launched by the fifth. In today’s world, where most things are optimised for speed, this continuity of time seems almost out of place – and that is precisely why it makes such a strong impression.
An object that tells a story
Flor de Caña 35 Year is not just about the contents. It is a whole in which the form consciously reflects its origins. Each of the mere 350 decanters is hand-finished, and its silhouette mirrors the contours of the San Cristóbal Volcano. The embossed texture of the glass captures its geometry, while the stopper, made of obsidian – volcanic glass – conveys the physical imprint of the place directly into the hand. The whole is complemented by a leather collar and a walnut box engraved with local flora, which functions more as an archival case than standard packaging.
A total of just 350 bottles have been produced worldwide, each with its own certificate of authenticity and individual numbering. Only five bottles are available on the Czech market, with a recommended retail price of around 95,000 korunas, making this edition a truly rare find even within the already niche segment of collectible rums. Alongside the classic 700 ml decanter, there is also a smaller 100 ml version, which offers a more accessible, albeit still exclusive, way to experience this spirit. In both cases, however, the essence remains the same – this is not a product intended for everyday consumption, but an object whose value lies in the time it embodies.
More than just rum
Flor de Caña has long built its identity on sustainability, and this aspect is present here too, albeit subtly. Distillation takes place using renewable energy, the rum contains no added sugar or artificial additives, and the entire ageing process remains natural, without technological intervention. This is not merely an addition to the story, but its very foundation.

There is no need to look for a marketing catchphrase in his words. This rum truly serves as a concentrated distillation of everything the brand has built across generations.
And perhaps that is precisely why there is no question as to how to drink it. The recommendation is simple: neat, without ice, ideally in a tasting glass. Nothing more is needed. In the case of a spirit that has matured for longer than most professional careers last, any intervention would be rather disruptive.
Flor de Caña 35 Year does not rely on showmanship, but on patience: on the ability to wait for time to do its work. And it reminds us that the most interesting things often come about precisely when there is no rush.
