Pastry chef Roman Janeček is introducing a new limited-edition summer flavour at his boutique on Pštrossova Street in Prague. The mini Piña Colada choux pastry was created in collaboration with Fenix Drinks and is inspired by the iconic cocktail of the same name that made Puerto Rico famous.
At Věnečky Janeček, summer is once again reflected in a new limited edition. Pastry chef Roman Janeček remains true to his philosophy of a single product—the mini choux pastry—and regularly presents it in new seasonal variations. This time, he’s focusing on tropical flavours and introducing the Piña Colada variation, created in collaboration with Fenix Drinks, a distributor of premium spirits. Beneath the yellow-green icing, reminiscent of fresh pineapple, lies a cream inspired by one of the world’s most famous cocktails. The result is a dessert designed to evoke the atmosphere of a summer holiday by the sea.
Piña Colada in the form of a wreath
Roman Janeček transforms the traditional egg-yolk wreath into a modern mini dessert, using the opportunity to experiment with less traditional flavours. This time, he draws inspiration from the Piña Colada cocktail, whose story began in 1954 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. “When creating the filling, I want to stay as close as possible to the original recipe that made the Piña Colada famous all over the world,” says Roman Janeček.
The base of the cream is Coco López coconut cream, made from ground coconut meat and cane sugar. Pineapple juice adds exotic sweetness, and the recipe is rounded off with Don Q Gold rum from the family-run Serrallés distillery in Puerto Rico, which lends the dessert depth and character.
“It’s a challenge to combine delicate choux pastry with intense Caribbean ingredients. I want the light cream to reflect both the strength of the Puerto Rican rum and the velvety sweetness of the coconut. I believe we’re creating a dessert that tastes like a sunny day on a Puerto Rican beach,” explains Roman Janeček.
Inspired by the iconic cocktail
The Piña Colada is one of the best-known tropical cocktails. Its creator is considered to be the barman Ramón “Monchito” Marrero from the Caribe Hilton hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico, who in 1954 combined pineapple juice, Coco López coconut cream, and Don Q Puerto Rican rum. The cocktail quickly became a symbol of holiday atmosphere, and it is precisely this mood that the new limited-edition confectionery range aims to capture. The hotel theme is also reflected in a photo editorial produced by Roman Janeček and Fenix Drinks at the Falkensteiner Hotel in Prague.
