On the island of Réunion, rums are produced that have earned the respect of connoisseurs thanks to their unusual approach to fermentation, distillation, tropical ageing and cask selection. Now, one of them is making its way to the Czech Republic. Savanna Unshared Cask Czech Republic 2026 is an 11-year-old Traditional Rum from 2014, which has matured in a tropical climate in a former cognac cask and was produced in a single, one-off batch. These 826 bottles represent a specific moment in the history of a single distillery – and of the Czech rum market.
On the world rum map, there are places where the local style is practically ingrained in the conditions in which the spirits are produced. Réunion is one of them. This French island in the Indian Ocean is volcanic, tropical and geographically distinctive, but for rum lovers, something else is even more important: it is home to the Savanna distillery, which has built a reputation over decades as a producer willing to do things a little differently. Savanna is not a brand that relies on a single style of rum. It works with various types of spirits, and its portfolio includes Traditional Rum, Agricole and the highly distinctive Grand Arôme. Experimentation is part of its DNA – from fermentation and distillation to tropical ageing and the search for interesting combinations of spirit and cask. This ability to demonstrate just how significantly a cask can transform the character of rum is one of the reasons why Savanna holds such a strong position among experienced rum enthusiasts.
And it is precisely this philosophy that underpins the Unshared Cask project. In this case, the name is not merely a catchy label for a limited edition. The principle is relatively simple, yet exceptionally appealing to rum lovers: every year, Savanna selects only a limited number of casks, and partner markets are given the opportunity to choose a single cask intended exclusively for their country. Its contents will subsequently never appear anywhere else in the world. Once a particular cask is sold out, its story ends and the same edition will never be repeated. One cask. One selection. One unmistakable signature.
This is also a fundamental difference from standard production, where the primary aim is to maintain a consistent flavour profile over the long term. With single-cask rum, on the other hand, it is precisely this variation that is its magic. Each cask influences the spirit in its own way, and over the years it develops its own distinct character. Tropical maturation on Réunion further enhances this process. The heat and humidity accelerate the interaction between the spirit and the wood, giving rise to a more intense and layered expression. The result, therefore, is not ‘just another Savanna’, but a specific Savanna from a specific cask at a specific moment in time. This is precisely why single-cask editions are so interesting not only to collectors, but also to tasters, who can observe, through individual casks, how the distillery’s signature changes according to the ageing conditions.
Czech selection: eleven years in the tropics and a cognac cask
This year’s Czech selection features a 2014 Traditional Rum, which spent a full 11 years maturing in the tropics. It found its home in ex-cognac Cask No. 207, and it is precisely this cask that is one of the main reasons why this particular rum tastes different from the classic aged Savanna Traditional. It has been bottled at its natural cask strength of 59.2% ABV, undiluted and unfiltered, in a form designed to preserve the character of the spirit and its maturation as faithfully as possible. A total of just 826 bottles were produced, intended exclusively for the Czech Republic.
The first impression is distinctive, but by no means recklessly aggressive. The aroma and flavour are dominated by wood, vanilla and slightly spicy notes, while the fruitiness remains clearly evident. Cask No. 207 has also imparted a subtly smoky character to the rum, which gives it a distinctive edge and sets it apart from the more classic profile of the Savanna TRA range. On the palate, the woody and smoky notes reappear, complemented by a slight hint of bitterness from oak tannins. Sweeter and fruitier notes, however, help to balance the overall profile. The result is a rum that is distinctive, yet elegant and well structured – it invites slow discovery rather than being gulped down.
It is therefore worth taking your time when tasting it. Fifty-nine per cent alcohol is not a figure to be ignored, but it is precisely the cask strength that forms part of this bottle’s story. The first sip may seem more concentrated, while subsequent sips reveal the individual layers. And if you want to give the rum a little more breathing space, a few drops of water can open up its aromas and alter the balance between wood, vanilla, fruitiness and smoke. This isn’t ‘dilution’ in the sense of spoiling the drink – rather, it’s another way of looking at the same cask.
Food pairing also offers some interesting possibilities, as the smoky and woody character of this rum doesn’t necessarily pair best with sweet treats alone. It can work well, for example, with desserts based on dark chocolate, caramel, roasted nuts or vanilla, where the rum complements the sweet and roasted notes. Contrast, however, can also be an interesting approach: a more distinctive mature cheese, or perhaps a dessert combining dark chocolate with a slightly salty element. The rum’s fruitiness, in turn, opens the door to candied or dried fruit. And if we wanted to be even more adventurous, its slightly smoky profile could also be paired with dishes featuring grilled or caramelised notes. In any case, this is a bottle where it makes sense to taste the rum on its own first, and only then look for a dish that complements its character.
The second Czech chapter
For Czech rum lovers, this year’s edition is interesting for yet another reason. Thanks to the official distribution of Savanna, the Czech Republic has become part of the Unshared Cask programme, and Savanna Unshared Cask Czech Republic 2026 is already the second Czech edition. It thus follows on from last year’s first release, which is no longer available. This is more significant than it might seem at first glance: the aim is not to create a single flashy limited edition that appears and then disappears, but to gradually build a tradition in which the Czech market will have its own cask, its own character and its own story every year.
And this is precisely where the Unshared Cask concept takes on its true meaning. Anyone who purchases this year’s bottle is not merely buying a rum with the year 2026 on the label. They are buying a specific cask, No. 207; a specific spirit from 2014; a specific expression of eleven years’ tropical maturation; and one of 826 bottles from this single batch. The next Czech bottling could be completely different – a different cask, a different vintage, a different maturation period, a different influence of the wood and, consequently, a different flavour profile.
This is precisely what makes the whole series so appealing. For the experienced rum connoisseur, Unshared Cask offers the chance to compare different casks and observe how Savanna’s character evolves with ageing. For collectors, each edition represents a self-contained story that cannot be replicated once it has sold out. And for someone who is only just beginning to explore premium rums, it can, on the other hand, be an interesting introduction to a world where rum is judged not only by its age or alcohol content, but also by its origin, cask, maturation method and the circumstances under which it was produced.
Savanna Unshared Cask Czech Republic 2026 is therefore not just another new bottle on the Czech market. It is the second chapter of a project set to continue in the years to come. And while some rum editions base their appeal on striving to taste the same every time, the value here is precisely the opposite: the next cask will be different. And that is precisely why it will be interesting to see where the Czech Unshared Cask range goes from here.
